No Child Should Walk Through Floodwater to Get to School

Red warning triagle saying flood, taken in Dore

Every child deserves a safe, clean walk to school. Right now, that’s not the reality for families that use the bottom entrance of Dore Primary School and Kingswood Nursery.

Behind the school, just above Saxon Avenue, heavy rain brings a recurring flood that has been ignored for far too long. This isn’t a one-off inconvenience, it’s been happening since at least 2021, when my own daughters attended Kingswood. Despite repeated reports from concerned parents, and the school, the council has offered no action, no explanation, and no urgency.

This flood is more than just a nuisance. The stagnant, dirty water is a genuine health hazard. I should know, I was once tasked with created educational material about the dangers of flood water produced by the British Red Cross. The crux of the messaging was that flood water, even in the UK is dangerous. In Dore, the surrounding paths become slippy and thick with mud, creating a real risk of trips and falls, especially for young children simply trying to get to school. Families are left with no good option: wade through unsafe water or struggle across boggy ground.

As one local mother I spoke to put it:

“On numerous occasions, I have been caught out by the Dore flood while trying to take my young children to school and nursery. This is not only impractical but also unsanitary… it makes the journey very unpleasant and difficult for my children. It is endlessly disappointing that the council do not take it seriously.”

She’s right! Enough is enough.

If elected, I will make this a priority. I will push for immediate investigation and a permanent solution so that no child has to arrive at school soaked, muddy, or at risk. Our community deserves better, and I will make sure your voices are finally heard.

Vote Nicola on 7th May, to ensure you have a loud voice representing you on the things that matter.
